Hurricane Season

We are now in the midst of hurricane season. With past hurricanes we have learned many valuable lessons, including what we should do with our finances. We would like to offer a few tips on what you should do to prepare financially for any natural disaster.

  • Keep some cash handy.  Have an emergency cash fund set aside in a safe, secure place.  Keep in mind that during power outages, ATMs  may not be accessible.
  • Keep a list of account numbers and phone numbers. Include on this list any credit unions, banks, credit cards, car loans, insurance, and mortgages that you may have.
  • Flood-proof your important papers.  Keep important documents in a plastic bag to protect them from any water damage.
  • Spread the wealth. Don’t give all of the credit cards and cash to one family member.  If you are separated for any reason you don’t want to leave someone stranded.
  • Set aside an emergency credit card. This credit card could be used to purchase food and supplies for a week or more if needed.  Using a credit card will help you document disaster expenses, which could possibly be reimbursed by your insurance company.
